Description
Cerazette is a contraceptive pill that works to prevent pregnancy through multiple mechanisms. A progestin-only contraceptive is one kind of birth control pill. It is often called the “mini-pill.” Regular birth control pills have two female hormones: estrogen and progesterone. The mini-pill has only progesterone in it. Because this pill doesn't contain estrogen, it may not have as many side effects (Progestin and progesterone are the same hormone). It is a progesterone-only oral contraceptive, which means it contains a synthetic form of the female sex hormone progesterone, specifically desogestrel. Unlike combined contraceptive pills, which contain both estrogen and progestin, Cerazette is suitable for women who cannot take estrogen due to various reasons, such as medical conditions or intolerance to estrogen. Cerazette primarily prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, which means it prevents the release of an egg from the ovaries. This is one of the key mechanisms of action in preventing conception. Cerazette also makes the cervical mucus thicker, creating a barrier that makes it more difficult for sperm to pass through and reach the egg. This thickening of cervical mucus hinders the sperm's ability to swim into the womb. Additionally, Cerazette affects the lining of the uterus (endometrium), making it less favorable for the implantation of a fertilized egg. This further reduces the chances of pregnancy. The progestin-only pill is better than regular birth control pills if you are breast-feeding because the mini-pill will not change your milk production and safe for women who are older than 35, who smoke, have high blood pressure, are overweight or have a history of blood clots. Cerazette is considered a reliable and safe contraceptive option when used correctly.
